Can fruits make people fat?
This is a pretty controversial topic because there are many people claiming that you can eat as many fruit as you want without gaining fat. And there are also many that say you should limit your intake. Here’s my honest opinion:
Fruits have so many health benefits! They are an amazing addition to your diet. However, the controversy around fruit is that it’s a source of Fructose. Fructose is used (differently than glucose) and then it is converted to glycogen.
Glycogen from fruit – stored in the liver. Glycogen from starches – stored in your muscles.
The problem is the liver can’t store that many carbs. Roughly only 2-3 glasses of juice worth of fructose.
If you’re not active throughout the day, the liver will fill up with glycogen and the excess may turn into fat.
However, the fructose from fruit is NOT the problem. It’s actually the fructose from High Fructose Corn Syrup in all the sweets and junk been eaten.
Here’s why it’s OKAY to eat fruit
✅ You will have to eat A LOT of fruit in order to actually fill up your glycogen stores. (Be careful of higher calorie fruit options such as grapes, dates, rasins, etc).
✅At the end of the day it comes down to energy balance. If you’re in a caloric balance or deficit, energy won’t be stored and fat won’t be gained.
✅Stop eating foods containing high fructose corn syrup! Also be careful of fruit Juice, there’s often times added sugar, it has less fibre and more calories stick to no more than 1 glass per day.
✅Fruits contain fibre and water. They’re generally low in calories and very hard to overeat. Just don’t go crazy and you’ll be fine.
✅I recommend you have 1-2 servings of fruit on Non-active days and 2-4 servings on your active days.
✅Break your fast with fruit! That hungry and groggy feeling in the morning is because your liver is depleted. Fruit will instantly make you feel better 🙂
